Enjoy the colorful life (besides southbank center)

The sunshine in London is so rare, after the long long winter, the cloudy day seems less and less from the April and when May comes, the real spring comes, which really give us a warm and exciting reason for photograph.

I went to Southbank quite ofter these days, one reason is this is not too far from my college, the second reason is I really enjoy lying on the barrier, watching the Thames river and the people around me.Every time when I have nothing to think about seriously, I feel it would be the real relax and then I can take photos as whatever I want to photograph.

Just like the color, not much, but enough for me to create new things.I like rich color,it always gives me a symble of active life. The yellow means sunshine and the red means passion, we need sunshine, we need passion, or, our life will be dead.

Uncountless people are sitting besides the river and enjoy the lovely day.The sky is painted too blue by god.No cloud, no wind. But I like it, people like it.

Life is continue…

A small world’s happiness

I always have a conception, that is common people need more care.Everyday, every moment, every media only concern about the famous people in the world, the big issue, event, march, festival, leadership, superstar. However, the homeless people will arouse certain kind of people’s sympathy, but this doesn’t solve the problem, they still homeless, for differnt reason. They still poor, no one can really help them get out of their miserable world. This is common in China, also in London.

However, if we turn our face to the common world, look at our surrounding, we will find everything, every individuals, every family are just like a crystal ball.We are curious about what we see and what we listen, we want konw what going on there. When I take my camera and walk around on the street, in the park, pass the shopping window, I always notice people arround me on purpose, wonder what they are doing, and then, catch the best moment during their talking, laughing, expressing theri emotion. They live in their own world at that moment, and didn’t notice there is another person, who is observing them and want to walk into their world.

As I am interested in street photography, carrying a camera whenever I go already become one of my custom. Because I believe as long as I am keen in this area, amazing things always happen. And I am interested in common things, common people, such common, usual things seems very  ordinary, but some of them in my opinion, it is beautiful, it is harmonious, it is the happiness thing in the world.

Yesterday was a very good day, the sunshine is warm and the wind is cosy , when I was walking in Burgess Park, a small park near my accomodation, enjoying the lovely sunshine and looking at the enviornment, I found a family, which has a little girl playing on the grass. The girl pointed the plane in the sky and shouted, and her mother was so interested in what she is doing. Such a lovely scene! I didn’t hasitate and photographed a lot.

Pigeon and the boy

There are so many boys and girls, women and men feed the pigeons everyday, every moment. When I am walking in the park, on the street, I always can see people feeding little animals. But when I saw this boy, standing in the St.James Park, feeding pigeons, I feel it is the most beautiful scene of feeding pigeons that I have ever seen here.

He was so concerntrate on what he’s doing now. He smiles to those little things, the smiles is so beautiful, so peaceful. At that moment, I feel nothing in the world can disturb him from doing this.Even when he found me taking photos for him, he didn’t mind, still smiling at those little birds. I was so fascinated by him and this pretty scene. And I can not stop documenting this.Maybe only in such city, maybe only in European country or America that people can it. Beacuse I know in China, we can’t see pigeons on the street, even in park, some people earn money through selling food to people those who want to feed the pigeon. In China, people treat feeding animals as a kind of fun, but I feel in London, people think it is a natural thing to feed animals because if our city lack of those animals, our city would be a kind of death.

Those are the photos I took of the scene on that day.And I will remember the date: April.12th.2013

That is the end of today’s story about the pigeon and the boy, but our life is continue.

Wandering Soul

Chinese government is always very busy demolishing dwelling these year and selling the land to the overseas merchant and rich business real estate agency. This phenomonen lasts about 10 years already since the reform and open of China.

So, lots and lots people lost their home and only get a little pension from government, those small amount of money can’t offord them a new comfortable house at all so they have to loan from the bank. Then their whole life is to work for bank just want to pay off the loan.

Most of the Chinese people lead such a poor life but small amount of rich business men and the officals, they master the most percent of money in China and use them for themselves. We know this, most of Chinese people know this, but we can not do anything for it, only bearing and escaping.

What I photographed is one of this dwelling in my home city-Wuhan.This is a big city and once was the biggest and busiest city in the world in the early 20th centry. But now,it begin to decline.

It is a pity that my home city become like this, I was born there and feel so lucky to be a witness of the development of the city. Now, most of the old and classical buildings are demolished by force, the force is from different aspect. What I photographed is just a kind of building-“Xian an fang”

I name this as “Wandering Soul” because when people was drived out of their home, they are wandering because although their bodies can be put into a room but the feeling of losing their home is just like a wandering soul which feel lonely and helpless.

Emotion of the city-Uncertainty

I always want to do a big project about the city London, which I arrived last September and will stay here for another 3 years.Future is the most uncertain thing, who knows?

London is a quite modern and cultural diverse city,I can not tell exactly what is different from Beijing, Tokyo or New York, some people say they all big city, they are all busy and modern cities, but few people can tell the differences between them.I never been to Beijing city before except the custom, although it is just in China, although it is just 9 hours train from my hometown. But people who came from Beijing, living here said: London is more attractive than other city.

Maybe, the red bus, the red telephone booth, Big Ben, Tower Bridge are the most popular signs to all the people in the world.Even me, can not get rid of the stereotype, when I arrived London last year, the first place I went to was Big Ben.I remember when I was walking along the Thames River on the Westminster Bridge, the Big Ben is just in front of my eyes.I can not control my emotion to the world famous building. It seems all the landscape is not important, only the Big Ben is the thing I want mostly.

So, I can understand well that when people living and walking in this city, what a complex emtion they have. But it is hard to express, through the photos. When I walking on the Oxford Street, I feel besides the Luxury, I can feel a really complicate feeling between the walkers and passersby.I want to use my lens to catch the face and the expression on their face. There are so many tourists there as well as the citizens. Also some photographers like me.:) I don’t know whether such kind of street portraits can express the emotion of the city but I am sure these must be one part of the big theme.

This four photos are my final exhibition show. Now the exhibition is in the lower street gallery.

St.Patrick Day Photojournalism

Saint Patrick is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. St Patrick is credited with bringing christianity to Ireland.

Why Saint Patrick’s Day?

Saint Patrick’s Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick’s Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.

In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick’s Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, “wearing of the green,” music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!

Above information (Not including photo) is from: http://www.st-patricks-day.com/

I am so lucky that I got known this big festival this year and documented some photos of this festival.I feel very happy to do the documentary and photojournalism. But that day was rainy all the time, some times heavier. But people still enjoyed themselves so much and I was influenced by the atmosphere too!

my attitude towards wedding photography

This is my best friend’s wedding and I am so lucky to be the only photographer in the wedding ceremony,I documented the whole preparation and the ceremony and feel it is a best thing that I ever did for her.

I treat wedding photography as a kind of photojournalism and what I treat it is a news, a impotant news about the bride and broom. And the photos will tell people more than a story about that day and tell what happened that day. My style is quite different from those people who take fashion wedding photopgraphy. This style is not very popular in China but  most of the Western people prefer this kind of wedding photography and everytime when they see those photos, the moment will make them remember some thing on their wedding ceremony day.

When I took these photos, it is my first time to document my friends wedding, but I do not feel nerves at all. I feel relax and float and I just use lens to record what I saw and what I feel. To catch the moment and to preserve the memory. I did this because she is my friend and I am glad to take photos for her and didn’t think about charge the money. One day shooting from 8:00 am till 6:00pm is a hard and tired job but I feel it is a previous memory. I realize who I am in the shooting and can feel more than the normal guest because I really took part into the her wedding and I was thinking, observing all the time and promoting myself in the whole community.

I hope I can still have more chance to take part into friends or people’s wedding, but since I came to Uk, I lost many chance to attend friends’ wedding in China and I am looking for the opportunity to photograph other couple but I still didn’t get the chance. But I won’t give up, I believe there must be some one like my style and will glad to accept me as their wedding photographer. I do this not just for money, although money is very important for me.I also want to have more experience and share the happiness with everyone on that day and I have a belief that when the couple get old, when they see my photos again, they will feel so happy and moved, they will laugh, they will cry, they will remember the what looks like in most important day in their life and then my aim is achieved.

Woman need power!—Half day photojournalism

2013 marks the 102nd anniversary of International Womens Day, and London is hosting a number of special events to celebrate the achievements of the feminist movement and highlight the need for the continued recognition of women’s rights. Join with girls and women around the world on Friday 8th March 2013 at these highlights for International Womens Day in London, which include film screenings, talks, marches, exhibitions and more.
I was so lucky that I happened to appear in the area of the march. As a photojournalist, I won’t miss the chance to document this event.

But it is the first time I take photos for the march, because in my country, at least in my city, no march is allowed. People are all busy doing their own business and although they want to say something or make a complain, no place can be offered to them. It is a pity and miserable phenomenon, but we can do nothing.

So, I can say I have no experience of facing this event. But luckily it is not a fight, it is just a march and the theme is “woman needs power”to against male’s violence. It is quite safe to shoot those people and no policeman will stop you taking photos.

So, during the 2 hours shooting,One memory card was full of data.I changed another card but at that time I realized I couldn’t contuine anymore because I was pretty hungry and felt dizzy!

Chinese stereotype:Lotus feet

Last year, when I was doing the project of protecting old Lifen in Wuhan, a middle-aged woman telephoned me,she said:My mother is the only woman who has a pair of lotus feet in this area, and could you come and see if you are interest in it.Of course I am interest in it!

The first glance at the woman, I felt she is a very active person although she is 90 years old already. She is good at talking and always feel proud of talking her past story. When we asked her if we can see her lotus feet, she was glad to show them to us.The first sight of seeing her feet, I nearly felt sick. That is a distortational feet, all the fingers except the thumb are forced under the sole and seemed has no bone inside.I can not image how could she walk on such an abnoral feet. However, what she said surprised me.She said it was not hurt at all and she can walk very normal as other person, quickly and without pain.I trust her because I really can not see any painful emotion from her face during the talk. And she also said “thanks” to the republic of China. Because she seems very satisfied with her life situation since the establishment of new China._MG_4521
It is hard to say how terrible is the Chinese old custom influence to those woman, I once watched a TV programme about an interview to the women who lived in a small village, all of them have lotus feet and only one of them felt proud of her “beautiful” feet. Now I found another women who is proud of her feet.We can say, the custom destory and distort not only women’s feet, but also her mind!

Luckily, the custom was  abandoned since the People’s repulic of China established.Although there are still some women who have lotus feet alive, the number of them reduced year by year.It is rare to find a woman still has the feet nowadays. As a photojournalist, it is my duty to find the lost custom, wether it is good or bad.Because it is a period of history, which is the witness of the development of a country. _MG_4581

The two hours past very quickly and I took plenty of her lotus feet photos.I hope to visit her again next year when I come back to China, and continue to document the story. _MG_4618
